UK Driving Licence Photo Requirements

• Printed size: 35 mm wide by 45 mm high.
• Digital size: At least 600×750 pixels, saved as a JPEG.
• Head size: Between 29 mm and 34 mm from the bottom of your chin to the top of your head.
• Colour: Use a colour photo. Black-and-white images fail.
• Quality: The image must look sharp, clear and evenly lit, with no filters or editing.

Background, Pose and Expression

• Background: Use a plain cream or light grey background. Avoid white, dark colours, patterns, objects and shadows.
• Pose: Face the camera directly, with your head straight and your shoulders level.
• Expression: Keep a neutral face, with your eyes open and your mouth closed.
• Hair: Keep hair away from your eyes and face.
• Lighting: Light your face evenly. Avoid glare, red-eye and shadows across your face or the wall.

Glasses and Head Coverings

• Glasses: Take them off. The DVLA follows passport photo rules, which allow glasses only in limited medical cases. Never wear sunglasses or tinted lenses.
• Head coverings: Wear one only for religious or medical reasons, and keep your full face visible from chin to forehead.

Driving Licence Photo Size in Pixels, Millimetres and Centimetres

Different forms use different units, so here is the same size in each:

For a provisional licence or a photocard renewal, the online service may let you use your passport photo if you hold a valid UK passport. Otherwise, it asks you to upload a new digital photo. Use the file from our editor when the service asks for it.
